The Night Watch

The Night Watch is about a young man in moscow. His name is Anton. But in this book, moscow is crawling with dark magicians and witches. There are 3 watches. The day watch, the night watch, and the twilight watch. Each of these are balanced in the city by a treaty. When one watch does good, the others have permission to do something bad.

I like this book because it is very adventurous with the story. People can go into the ‘twilight’ which is a deeper layer into the world where time goes slower and only magicians and witches can go there.

In this book, Anton patrols the city and gets new recruits for his watch or tries to stop unlicensed feeding on the normal people. There is a scripture which foresees a girl who becomes a great magician and is very powerful and she is dew to fall in love with Anton; a weak magician.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone willing to read it.

Autobiography

I fell, dove, or whatever you want to call it. It hit me, ripping the water’s fine surface. Ripples surged around the pool. I had no clue what I had got. Hopefully a high-score. But the judges weren’t feeling I had earned one. I had to go round just once more, the line that seemed to never end was trailing down the pool-side, towards the many thousands watching. My heart thumped hard in my chest. It was my turn, Again.

This time, I would go backwards. But my eye stung from the previous attempt. stumbling backwards, I plunged deep into the pool, my eye, searing with pain as I sank to the cavernous depths of the pool.

Well, it wasn’t too bad when I finally got a grip and scrambled towards the light, piercing the water’s surface. I don’t think that I could of come first at any point, but at least I felt that I could of at the time, if I hadn’t fallen.

My name is Luke Spencer and I was born on the 14th of October, 2002, on a Monday. I have done many things that are quite adventurous in my time, (including the story I have shared with you in this piece) so far, starting from scuba-diving in the Atlantic Ocean, to searching the bays for golden coins, ‘A Pirate’s Booty’. By the way, I was successful in both of these operations, in the sea I discovered many things; I even killed a huge crab with a mop, and on the bays I found one gold and one silver coin.

My first word is unknown, as I muttered something when I was small, but nobody really knows what. I was an interesting baby, allergic to many things, like milk, kiwi, nuts, dairy, most things, really. I daily had anaphylactic treatment in my load of stuff as a breakout could occur at any point in time. Of course my parents didn’t acquire this information ’till I was about 3-4 years old.

When I was about 3 I went to St. Stephen’s C.O.E Primary, Deptford. I was there for around 8 years of my life, from day 1, I met my friend who now lives 2 minutes from my house and we hang out pretty much every day. But I was a very successful mathematician as a kid, most teachers found out how annoying a child could be when they made a mistake. Unluckily, Maths was one of my only loved and successful subjects as an infant. But that didn’t stop me from being a passionate English-loving child. I ended up, in year 6, with a 6c in English, and a 6a in maths. The other subjects were scattered around in the fives.

As a child I spent a lot of my time playing football, but never had a team until early year 7. Football was my main hobby that I was very passionate about back as a child, I still play now, but I am not as in-love with football as I was. Any spare time I had, I would spend on League Of Legend, World Of Warcraft, or Counter Strike: Source. Those are all computer games which were big franchises back then. I was a bit of a gamer, but now, my Steam account is worth more than my bank, which I believe, is getting quite serious.

Now, I plan to be a successful, highly known, mathematician, which I feel is quite likely, as I have a well above average level of an 8a in year 7. I’m not quite sure how I will even begin to accomplish this, but there is and will always be a way for me to accomplish my dreams! I do plan to go to college and study, get a degree, and then settle with a nice job, slowly climbing the wall of fame, but that is to come, and I will never know exactly what to expect in the future.

Dear Mr. Dastagir

Dear Mr Dastagir,

I have come to you today to address a huge problem throughout the school which I feel is causing pain. I have come here today to break the shackles and free the victims of the mental pain. I have come here today to address ‘ banter’.

Banter has become an excuse for the pupils to insult others,’ as a joke ‘, and this is affecting the pupils of the school in lots of ways; like mentally lowering self-assurance, creating fights in many classes. Overall, banter is distracting pupils from their learning.

The reason that I feel ‘banter’ is an issue needing to be dealt with forcefully is because people use it as an excuse. People use it as an excuse to insult others, bring families into the matter, be racist, and many more insults. This is why I feel ‘banter’ has to be dealt with ‘forcefully’.

‘Its just Banter’ is just a way of saying it isn’t my fault that you were hurt, and saying that it was meant to be just a joke. They use ‘banter’ to say, also, it isn’t their responsibility that you didn’t take the ‘banter’ as a joke, but as an insult.

The penalty for using the phrase, ‘it’s just banter’ should have ruthless sanctions, perhaps one hour detention, for not taking responsibility for mentally injuring the ‘victim’s’ self esteem and mind-set.

‘Banter’ is also used slip past the sanctions for racism, and this is making students of this school feel that they are in-charge and this must be dealt with because it leads to fights, eventually. It leaves students feeling they have the rights to undermine a teacher and be rude to them.

One of the worst outcomes that ‘banter’ can cause is bullying, when one pupil begins to insult another, then calling it ‘banter’, the victim feels that they have been bullied. But the bully, (not aware that they are a bully), just explains that it is a joke, (which it was in the beginning, or it was meant to be,) hence attempting to escape the claws of the sanctions. And for a school with a ‘perfect ethos’ it has been destroyed, internally, by the students themselves. This is why I think that ‘banter’ must be dealt with very soon.

One of the worst insults that ‘banter’ is used to cover, is racism. Racism is covered by ‘banter’ because one pupil will say something to do with their skin color or their home country, as a joke, but the second student will probably not take it as a joke. A serious issue that must be dealt with emerges. When the 1st pupil calls it ‘banter’ when they are told off for being racist, that just makes it worse because the 2nd student does not feel they are equal to the 1st. This leads to further problems throughout the school; thus, this is one of the worse things banter covers.

Mr Dastagir, I hope you take this in as a serious problem, and please reply with any ideas that you have to dampen the sincerity of the situation. A few ideas that I had were, maybe you give a thirty minute or an hour detention. Or, possibly you could put anyone who calls the cussing (insults) ‘banter’ in referral for 2 days.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Spencer.

an unusual character

The rain pounded on the windows, begging to be let in, as if fearful for it’s lives; the hail was crashing down onto the rugged pavement below. A silhouetted figure swept past the window; at once the rain stopped, perhaps he was back… The one… The one who creates… The creator…

How Does Salman Rushdie Create An Atmosphere In Chapter 1?

HAROUN AND THE SEA OF STORIES

The atmosphere in chapter one is set by many descriptions and events throughout chapter one. The most important description is on the first page and tells us that there will be a theme of sadness which will be further emphasised throughout the book. The quotation is,
“A city so ruinously sad that it had forgotten it’s name”
This quote is one of the most important parts of the description because it gives a huge emphasis on the sad atmosphere by the word ‘ruinously’ which means that the sadness was so bad that it had ruined a once legendary city. This is a foreshadowing of extremely sad events to come later on throughout the book. A few of these events are: Soraya, haroun’s mum, Leaves him and his dad; his dad forgets how to tell stories and then becomes sad like everyone else in the sad city. This is how Salman Rushdie creates an atmosphere in chapter one.

The author, Salman Rushdie, also has a main theme of storytelling which, has a few mentions throughout the book, like “Arabian Nights”, ” Tangled” and there is couple more in the book, i believe, because Rashid tells stories and is called “the ocean of notions” because he tells elaborate stories of by heart whenever needed. Thus, he is a happy citizen of the sad city, again, emphasising on sadness and desparity, compared to the fact that 1 in about 1000 is happy in the world. This prepares you for the events to come throughout the book, which make you feel for the characters in the book. Making you drawn in to keep reading through the book and find the final outcome for the family’s future. This is another way in which Salman Rushdie creates an atmosphere in chapter one.

There are some ideas that Salman Rushdie puts into chapter one and develops later on. One of these is the mentioning of ” story water “. This substance of ” story water ” is what Rashid says gives him the power to tell elaborate stories. But in chapter five, Rashid is sad ( because his wife, Soraya runs away ) and loses his ” subscription ” to the ” story water ” and it is removed from Rashid’s bathroom. Another one of these ideas is a theme of sadness and despair; many events in chapter one which happen, emphasise sadness and desparity throughout the chapter. One of these events is when Soraya, ( Rashid’s wife ) runs of with her neighbour ( Mr. Sungupta ) this leaves a hole in Rashid’s heart which emphasises on sadness and despair. This is also how Salman Rushdie creates an atmosphere in chapter one.

Another idea in chapter one is about ” Khattam Shud ” being the end. Whereas in chapter four, it becomes the name of a forbidden villain; A feared villain. I think this is because “the end” is a threatening phrase, thus becoming a forbidden name, like ‘Voldemort’ from Harry Potter. This is another idea that Salman Rushdie puts into his book, ” Haroun And the Sea Of Stories ”

the water genie

Understanding:

-the bathroom door was open and the light was on, and as haroun watched
He saw, silhouetted in the open doorway, a figure almost too
Astonishing for words.

-while this remarkable monologue was being delivered, Haroun Khalifa move
his head very, very slowly, until half an eye was looking around the door- jamb into the bathroom: where he saw a small, ancient-looking man, no bigger than himself, wearing a huge purple turban on his head(that was the onion)
And baggy silk pyjamas gatjered at the ankles (thise were the aubergines).

-this little fellow sported an impressive full set of whiskers, of a most unusual colour: the palest, most delicate shade of sky blue.

Analysis:

Sported
Gathered
Wearing
Delivered
Astonishing

Ext, these words suggesy he is like a fashionable man, very interested in fashion

Securing analysis:

Rhyme= ‘oh, aha, is that where you are?’
Simile= ‘and what looked like a monkey wrench in the other.’
Repetition= ‘hot tap, cold tap’
Alliteration= ‘outsize onion’

a busy place

The sun exploded into the morning sky!
The ruccus of engines starting up and motoring away.
The world was shocked back into life and every,
single thing kickstarted; the city was alive…
One last time.

The darkness hid behind any structure that would
block the light; attempting to just sleep once more;
avoiding the beams of sun, that awaken them
forever. This…

Was a busy city…

Among Thieves

Among thieves is a book about an assassin who is working for the boss of the dark side of a city a long time ago that is ruled by a group of imperials and their leader has 3 reincarnations and so the assassin has to stop a war before it happens so the sashes-imperials don’t find out because they are the strongest men in the entire empire by a long way.the assassin has a friend sworn by oath- a Degan – a legendary swordsman from ancient times owned by a grey prince-unknown.the earliest part of the book is about him torturing someone for information and then it goes on to his usual life. After that it becomes about an assassination and also he is set on a mission from his boss and goes to a town of poor people-criminals and they all want him dead so he ends up being ambushed by almost an entire town and finds an escape.they get out through the sewers and hear a conversation about a book that the assassin dosn’t want to have after he ends up going on a long quest and nearly dying to get it- he has to fight two white sashes to get the book. And then he finds out what the book is, a special code and it was named a strangely ancient name. And this all happens in Illdreca. Then we find out that the assassin is called Drothe and his sister is royalty. What now happens now is that he goes into a dream world controlled by the grey prince but he doesn’t know that just yet. When he finds out, he talks to Degan who refuses to talk about it. He said that a secret kept for 100 years must stay a secret kept for longer.

Most important event in part 3- rime of the ancient mariner.

I think the event of the game with the spirit;
In the stansa,”the naked hulk, alongside came
And the twain wer casting dice;
“The game is done!I’ve won!I’ve won!”
Quoth she, and whistles thrice.”

I think this is the most important event because it kind of explains what the game is about and she is extremely happy that she has won so I think it might be quite an important event.
I think the game is also about she is gambling with the”naked hulk” for the souls of the crew who died on the mariner’s ship.Therefore personally i think this is the most important stansa.
